A growing number of school districts in the United States are using interview-rating systems to assist in selecting quality teacher candidates for employment. These interview-rating systems identify teacher candidates based on character traits and demonstrate that hiring teachers with certain character traits can promote student achievement (Clemons, 2010; Sanders & Rivers, 1996). We use Ventures for Excellence, founded by Dr. Vic Cottrell after 30 years of studying qualities of excellent teachers (Ventures for Excellence, 2004). The interviews include a set of open-ended questions that allow for individual interviewee interpretation. The questions are designed to determine follow-through behaviors of teacher candidates and potential for being a quality teacher.
